Pelosi Statement on the 82nd Birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama

San Francisco – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in recognition of the 82nd birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama:

“Today, millions of Tibetans, Buddhists and peace-loving people across the world mark a joyous day: the birthday of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. His Holiness is not only a spiritual leader to his people, but also one of the greatest voices for human rights and peace across the globe. His lifelong mission to bring international attention to the human rights situation in his beloved homeland and to stand up for the human dignities and freedoms of every man, woman and child is an inspiration to all.

“Tragically, Tibetans remain deprived of their fundamental freedoms and are struggling to preserve their religion, culture and language in the face of Chinese oppression. It is unconscionable that China continues to use its strength to bully and oppress Tibetans, and to deny them any chance at attaining meaningful autonomy. Recent threats from the Chinese government’s mouthpiece, Global Times, against UC San Diego and its Chancellor for inviting His Holiness to speak at commencement are deeply disturbing, and deserve the international community’s swift and unified condemnation.

“Speaking at UC San Diego’s commencement, His Holiness delivered a message of hope and optimism, telling students, ‘You have the opportunity to create a better world, a happier world.’ For his lifelong commitment to creating a better, happier world, and for his cherished friendship, men and women across America send our warmest wishes to His Holiness for a peaceful, joyful and blessed birthday.”
