Tibetan Center for Human Rights and Democracy releases 2014 Annual Report
Covering death in detention, collective punishment, restrictions on the right to freedom of assembly and association, and more, the report covers the human rights situation in Tibet over the last year. A new section at the end includes a political prisoner list detailing 2,110 Tibetans known to be imprisoned for political offenses. Dalai Lama to Tibetans in Denmark: “Do not lose heart”
Speaking to an audience of Tibetans during his trip to Europe, the Dalai Lama told those who had come to see him: “Things are changing in China. There will be an opportunity for us to return to our homeland. We have all worked hard and that day will dawn. Do not lose heart.” He also spoke about political developments in China and compared Tibetan and Chinese outlooks: “Just as the Chinese love their culture, we Tibetans love our culture and language and seek to preserve them.” For more please see more on the Dalai Lama’s official site.
Central Tibetan Administration officials meet with members of the South African government
The South African government was widely criticized after caving to Chinese pressure and denying the Dalai Lama a visa last year, perhaps most forcefully by South African Nobel peace laureate Desmond Tutu, who referred to them as a ‘lickspittle bunch’ he was ashamed to call his government. This week exiled Tibetan leaders met with South Africa’s Deputy Foreign Minister in an attempt to explain the Dalai Lama’s Middle Way Approach and the reality of the situation in Tibet.
