Since 1988, the International Campaign for Tibet has brought together citizens around the world to make the voice of Tibet heard. With the help of people like you who care, we’ve achieved many victories—some small, some large—in helping the people of Tibet.
Even a small effort can turn into big results.
World Bank Resettlement Project Blocked
Thanks to the voices of ICT members and supporters—
through letters, phone calls, faxes, and emails—we stopped the World Bank from resettling tens of thousand of Chinese onto the Tibetan plateau.
The World Bank was expected to approve the project right up until the last minute. Never before had a project been canceled at such a late stage of the process when both the Bank and China strongly endorsed it. What may have become a terrible precedent of international funding for population transfer into Tibet, had become a landmark victory for Tibetans and all indigenous and occupied peoples struggling to protect their lands.
Buddhist Nun Released from Prison
Ngawang Sangdrol, a Tibetan Buddhist nun, was detained in 1992 at age 15. She was detained and imprisoned for peacefully demonstrating against the Chinese occupation of Tibet. Her prison term spiked from an initial three years to a combined sentence of 23 years - a result of several sentence extensions within prison.
Thanks to the voices of ICT members, along with intense pressure from governments around the world, she was released in October, 2002, nine years before the end of her sentence.
Dalai Lama Awarded the Congressional Gold Medal
ICT members successfully petitioned their members of Congress resulting in the award of the Congressional Gold Medal to the Dalai Lama in 2007, recognizing his outstanding contributions to peace, nonviolence, human rights and religious understanding. The award, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the U.S. Congress, was presented by the former President Bush in a public ceremony sending Beijing an unequivocal message of support for The Middle Way Approach of His Holiness.
Raise Your Voice for Tibet
Six million Tibetans desperately need your help. They are:
- Denied the right to freely practice their religion and preserve their culture;
- Forced from their land and stripped of their nomadic tradition;
- Impoverished, most with scarce access to health care and education; and
- Threatened with imprisonment and torture for their support of the Dalai Lama.
The International Campaign for Tibet champions the cause of the Tibetan people throughout the world. We invite you to join us.
