Tibet Outside the TAR: context on eastern Tibet

Tibet Outside the Tibet Autonomous Region CD-Rom

Most of the self-immolations in Tibet since 2009 have taken place in the areas of Kham and Amdo, outside the Tibet Autonomous Region.

In order to give context to the current situation, ICT is making available for download a survey of several of the eastern Tibetan areas where resistance and repression have been most intense over the past few four years. The reports included below are extracted from the CD-Rom Tibet Outside the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) by Steven D Marshall and Dr Susette Cooke, and made available with their kind permission. Note that the report is based on fieldwork undertaken in 1995/6 but much of the information remains relevant to our understanding of the dynamics of the region today.
