Brown University Student is Winner of First ICT Light of Truth Essay Contest
Tenzin Dorjee, a Tibetan student at Brown University in the United States, was the first place winner in ICT's 2002 Light of Truth Essay Contest
The International Campaign for Tibet is pleased to announce the results of the first Light of Truth essay contest.
The five judges gave the first prize to Tenzin Dorjee, a Tibetan student at Brown University in the United States.
The two second prizes went to:
- Ngawang Choeney of SOS TCV Hospital in Bylakuppe, South India, and
- Ngawa Loten in Dharamsala.
The three third prizes went to:
- Dhondup Tsering, of the Tibet Journal at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala, India,
- Bochungtsang Dondrub Lhadhar of the Sarah Institute in Dharamsala, and
- Geshe Jampel Senge in Australia.
The prizes, $1,000 for first, $500 for second and $250 for third, can be used by winners at their discretion.
The judging panel consisted of Kasur Sonam Topgyal, Ven. Khandro Rinpoche, Mr. Tsering Shakya, Mr. Pema Bhum, and Prof. Dawa Norbu. Entries were judged on the basis of content, responsiveness to the question and for leadership qualities. Each judge received copies of the essays from which the names and identifying information had been removed. The judges rated each essay from 1 to 10 and the winners were selcted by taking an average of each score.
More than 70 essays were submitted and 52 qualified. The others were received after the deadline or exceeded the word limit.
Writers were invited to comment on one of the following topics:
- How can the Tibetan leadership in exile most effectively motivate and inspire Tibetans in Tibet?
- How can Tibetans inside Tibet, including current Tibetan political leaders, build greater unity among Tibetans in the three Cholkas (provinces)?
- In a post-solution Tibet, what rights should be granted to Chinese workers and residents living in Tibet?
ICT congratulates the winners and everyone who submitted essays. The next essay contest will be announced in September, 2002.
