Bader Record on Tibet
Jeffrey Bader has worked on Tibet issues over his nearly three decades of public service. His experience in Asia policy includes service as a staff assistant to Richard Holbrooke in the East Asia Pacific Bureau at the State Department (when the U.S. normalized relations with Beijing in 1979); as a political officer in Beijing in the early 1980s; as deputy director of the China desk in the late 1980s during the crackdown in Tiananmen Square and the imposition of martial in Tibet; as China desk director in the 1990s; director of Asian affairs at the NSC from 1997 to 1999; as the lead negotiator on China's entry into the World Trade Organization. Before his return to the NSC, Bader most recently was the Director of the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution.
