Two monks from Minyak monastery in Drango (Chinese: Luhuo) county in Kardze (Chinese: Ganzi) TAP were detained by police on March 25, 2009 for calling on local people to participate in the farming boycott in the area. RFA’s sources gave the names of the monks as Olu and Thubten.
The source added that two days later, government officials traveled to the area with farming equipment, but that local people refused to cooperate and started to protest. Twenty people were reportedly detained, of whom 11 were beaten by police at the scene.
ICT’s sources added that 14 people were severely beaten and hospitalized for refusing to farm in Drango county after police arrived in the area on March 26 and 27 to try and force people to work in the fields. One woman, identified as Khether, was reported to have some sort of nervous collapse following the beating. (INS 090401-2:34.)
