Liu Xiaobo

Imprisoned 2010 Nobel Peace Prize winner, Liu Xiaobo.

ICT congratulates imprisoned writer and human rights activist Liu Xiaobo on being awarded the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize today.

Liu Xiaobo represents an undeniable and irrepressible sector of Chinese civil society who recognize that the PRC cannot truly achieve great power status until all peoples living under its rule enjoy a full measure of rights protected by law.

ICT stands beside those justly proud Chinese who celebrate this victory for freedom of expression, and who aspire to someday sharing in an intellectual debate with a freed Liu Xiaobo on the development of an open and democratic society within the PRC.

The Dalai Lama said in a statement today: “Awarding the Peace Prize to Liu Xiaobo is the international community’s recognition of the increasing voices among the Chinese people in pushing China towards political, legal and constitutional reforms.”

Liu Xiaobo, who has written prominently on Tibet, has demonstrated a lifetime’s commitment to the social ideals he came to enshrine in Charter 08.
