Dharamsala, India: International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) President Matteo Mecacci, a member of ICT’s U.S. Board of Directors, and ICT Europe Executive Director Tsering Jampa have wrapped up a series of meetings with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the democratically elected Tibetan leadership in exile, and Tibet support groups based in Dharamsala and in Delhi. The meetings were the first for Mecacci in his official capacity as ICT President.

Topics discussed included the situation in Tibet, the rising international concerns regarding China’s policies both in Tibet and internationally, the strengthening of cooperation between ICT, the democratically elected Tibetan leadership in exile and Tibet Support Groups, and strategies to bring the issue of Tibet at the center of the international discussion on the relations between democratic countries and China as a key to help the people of Tibet realize their aspirations. All participants – including Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile Penpa Tsering and Members of its Standing Committee, political leader Sikyong Lobsang Sangay, Kalon Dicki Chhoyang of the Department of Information and International Relations, Kalon Dolma Gyari of the Home Department and Kalon Dongchung Ngodup of the Security Department– reiterated their appreciation for the work done by ICT over 25 years thanks to the commitment of ICT members and supporters throughout the U.S., Europe and worldwide, and warmly welcomed Mecacci as the new leader of the organization and as a longtime friend, experienced politician and advocate for the Tibetan people.

“Catching up with old friends and making new ones is always worthwhile,” Mecacci said. “But socializing was not our mission. The consensus we reached on concrete strategic actions all parties will now take is what made these meetings so productive and hopeful. Of course, being in the presence of His Holiness brought a most welcome sense of peace as well, and as always, reinforced our commitment.”

Members of the ICT delegation shared details of the organization’s newly launched initiatives designed to amplify the voice of Tibetans around the world and advance the cause of Tibetan self-determination.
