ICT Europe and the United Nations

Efforts to participate effectively in the UN forum, in particular, at the annual UN Commission on Human Rights, have been one of ICT Europe's top priorities.

ICT Europe works intensively at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva urging governments from around the world to help in efforts to improve human rights in Tibet and vote for resolutions condemning China's records there.

In addition, ICT Europe has organized major activities, including bringing ICT's Board Chair, Richard Gere, to Geneva to give briefings and meet with Commission members. ICT Europe has also hosted screenings of "Tibet's Stolen Child" about the young Panchen Lama while ICT Europe Executive Director, Tsering Jampa, has annually delivered statements about the ongoing violations at the Commission.

ICT Europe makes concerted efforts to seek the support of members of the European Parliament for resolutions on human rights in China at the Commission. ICT Europe meets regularly with MPs and senior officials from the Office of the Commissioner for External Affairs.

ICT Europe has also been instrumental in providing over 60 Tibet groups in Europe with up-to-date information on the developments within the EU on these resolutions.

ICT Europe makes frequent appeals to UN Special Rapporteurs to draw attention to ongoing religious persecution in Tibet, including appealing to the Special Rapporteur on Religion and Belief to take urgent action about China's expulsion of thousands of monks and nuns from their monastic encampment at Serthar.

ICT Europe also participates in other UN fora such as the UN World Conference Against Racism and Xenophobia in South Africa, September 2001, where it was an officially accredited delegation. Despite having its accreditation blocked by China in a general assembly vote in 2002, ICT participated as a member of an accredited NGO at the UN's World Summit on Sustainable Development in South Africa in September 2002.
